Ayurvedic oils for body care and massages

In the Ayurvedic tradition, the use of herbal oils is fundamental. They are used for their effective and specific virtues. Among the plants from which they are extracted are castor oil, neem, calophylla, rosemary and turmeric. They can be applied to the whole body, in particular through Ayurvedic care or massages

In this article, we'll look at the origins of Ayurvedic oils and then examine their various uses and specificities.

Ayurvedic oils have been used for millennia in Ayurveda to treat various imbalances and promote health and well-being. They are made by combining various plants, herbs, roots and other natural ingredients in a carrier oil base. Each Ayurvedic oil is formulated for specific needs, whether to relieve muscular tension, soothe inflammation, promote relaxation or stimulate circulation

In Ayurvedic medicine, oils are considered important vectors for healing, as they can penetrate deep into the body's tissues and balance the doshas, or vital forces that govern health according to Ayurveda: Vata (air and ether), Pitta (fire and water) and Kapha (water and earth). By applying specific oils adapted to one's dosha type or state of imbalance, the aim is to restore harmony and health.

Oils are often used in massages called "Abhyanga". These massages are not only intended to relax the muscles and nourish the skin, but are also seen as a means of restoring energy balance in the body. Gently massaging the body with warm oils stimulates blood circulation, calms the nervous system and eliminates toxins, promoting an overall sense of well-being. Finally, Ayurvedic oils are also used in the practice of "Shirodhara", a deep relaxation technique in which a thin stream of warm oil is continuously poured over the patient's forehead, usually over the third eye chakra. This practice aims to calm the mind, eliminate stress and promote heightened awareness.

Among the countless oils used in Ayurveda, Neem oil, calophylla oil and castor oil are particularly appreciated for their many virtues. Let's take a look at how they are used.

Use of neem oil

Also known as margosa oil, neem oil is packed with natural benefits, which is why it is so widely used in India. Neem oil is said to be highly effective against a variety of skin problems. We can think specifically of :

  • acne;
  • psoriasis;
  • eczema.

Neem oil also keeps skin in good condition. It is also very useful for calming the skin. Thanks to its purifying properties, it helps fight parasites. For daily use, we recommend combining this oil with coconut oil.

Use of calophylla oil

Calophylla oil is recommended for skin hydration. Otherwise known as Tamanu oil, it is effective in treating pimples, redness, vein disorders and sunburn. For the latter problem, this oil can be used both for preventive action and to relieve skin burns.

Because of its virtues, calophylla oil is often used in anti-aging creams. It's very easy to use. Simply massage a few drops into the skin.

Use of castor oil

Another vegetable oil with highly interesting properties is castor oil. Used for centuries, it is characterized by its versatility. It is extracted from castor seeds. Its uses include food supplementation and dermatology. It is recognized for its detoxifying properties on the epidermis

It also helps the skin to heal properly. Rich in omegas 6 and 9, and ricinoleic acid, castor oil moisturizes and deeply nourishes the skin. It is ideal for dry skin, but is also suitable for problem skin (redness, pimples...).

Castor oil can also be used to nourish and protect hair. It is said to calm the scalp and activate hair regrowth. It is also effective for invigorating hair and adding shine.

Castor oil is also ideal for strengthening and promoting the growth of eyelashes and damaged nails.

Castor oil is one of the densest vegetable oils, which translates into high viscosity, so it's best to mix it with another oil for a more pleasant application, such as coconut, almond or olive oil.

In short, Ayurvedic oils are essential allies for health and well-being, offering a multitude of benefits thanks to their natural properties. Neem, calophylla and castor stand out in particular, offering solutions for a variety of skin and hair problems. By incorporating them into our skincare and massage rituals, we honor an ancient tradition while benefiting from the wonders of nature to take care of ourselves.
