Balancing the three doshas - the fundamental principle of Ayurveda

The two key words constantly recurring in Ayurvedic texts are mood and balance. The doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha, which can be translated as moods, need to be rebalanced at all times, and soothed or increased through various behaviours, activities or techniques. Rebalancing the doshas (moods) is the fundamental principle of Ayurveda, and can be achieved through diet, activities such as yoga or meditation, relaxation techniques, massage, herbal medicine...

A good balance of our daily activities is one of the rules we need to adopt to enjoy good health. Adjusting our life rhythms is essential to developing optimum health potential. Not allowing ourselves to be overwhelmed by negative thoughts, taking a step back from events, putting things into perspective and calming our racing minds - all these things can be learned, and this is what is meant by "the art of living according to the principles of Ayurveda".

Ayurvedic plants for serenity

Anxiety, when left unchecked, leads to a state of stress that can be dangerous to health. However, it is an emotion that calls for caution in certain circumstances. It is therefore more appropriate to learn how to manage it than to try to make it disappear.

Ashwagandha is a plant widely used in Ayurvedic medicine. It favors a better management of emotions and awakens vitality. Its virtues are numerous and its adaptogenic character allows it to act on several systems of the body. In addition to regulating anxiety, it is also effective against insomnia. It is thus a plant which supports a complete personal development.

Ayurveda also recommends the use of Mucuna to induce a state of mental well-being. Thanks to its action on the brain, it is indicated to stimulate motivation and serenity. It owes this effectiveness to the production of L-Dopa, precursor of dopamine, the neurotransmitter of happiness and pleasure, which it induces. The organism produces this molecule during sleep but can lack it in certain pathological situations. The nervous system is then no longer adequately stimulated and behavior is altered. Mucuna, better than many natural or synthetic substances, restores this balance and promotes well-being.

Food for serenity

The Ayurvedic conception of food is both hedonic and therapeutic. It is indeed a significant determinant of well-being. Several spices used in Indian cuisine are recognized for their flavor, nutritional qualities and therapeutic virtues. For example, turmeric, in addition to its cooking properties, has soothing and anti-stress propertiesCoriander stimulates several systems in the body and cloves are useful against mental fatigue. Thus, food allows us to promote well-being in the same way as yoga, massage and meditation.

Stimulation of intelligence and concentration

Ayurveda recommends the use of centella asiatica to stimulate a state of concentration essential to a better management of emotions. This plant in addition to its properties in cosmetics, is useful to stimulate the cerebral functions. It is of great help to the memory, sharpens the intelligence and favors an open mind.

Thus, for a physical and mental well-being, it is essential to know how to manage your emotions. Ayurvedic medicine offers a set of means and techniques recognized for their effectiveness in achieving this goal.
