Fenugreek, a health ally

There's a lot of talk about Ayurveda, but what exactly do we know about this principle of life? Ayurveda is not just a healthy way of looking after your body, it's an art of living, a tradition... that goes back to ancestral Indian practices. Ayurveda heals both body and mind, and takes into account the individual from every angle, whether physical, psychological or emotional.

Ayurveda is also characterized as an ancestral medicine that relies on natural products, particularly plants, to prevent, relieve and cure various ailments.

Among the various Ayurvedic plants is fenugreek, a plant with multiple virtues.

What is fenugreek ?

Feuilles de Fenugrec

The fenugreek plant is native to India and the Middle East. It is also known as trigonella or senegrain. Its leaves are very similar to those of clover. When it blooms, fenugreek has beautiful white, slightly yellow flowers. These flowers produce pods from which seeds can later be extracted. To do this, the pods are dried and then beaten to remove the seeds. The seeds have a very distinctive smell, reminiscent of fennel.

This plant is used both as a remedy and as a condiment to flavor dishes. While it has come to occupy a place in our daily lives, it was also used as animal fodder.

Fenugreek composition

Thanks to its rich composition, fenugreek has numerous health benefits. In particular, it is effective in 3 areas :

Facilitates digestion

Fenugreek significantly improves digestion and calms digestive irritation. For all these reasons, this seed is mainly used as a tonic during periods of fatigue, convalescence or after operations.

Trigonella seed has a mucilaginous action; it protects the mucous membrane of the intestines and stomach, but also relieves inflammation, ulcers and indigestion. Consumption of fenugreek facilitates better absorption and digestion of nutrients in food. For people suffering from eating problems, such as lack of appetite, it helps to increase the sensation of hunger and give small eaters an appetite. Finally, in cases of constipation, fenugreek can accelerate intestinal transit and thus have a laxative effect.

Helps stabilize blood sugar levels

Among its many active ingredients, fenugreek contains alkaloids, specifically trigonelline, which helps control blood sugar levels. It optimizes carbohydrate absorption. It increases both the quantity and effectiveness of insulin when blood sugar levels are too high.

In humans, Fenugreek's first major action is to stimulate appetite, which is a first step towards regaining health, particularly during convalescence. Surprising as it may be, despite its aperitive action, Fenugreek also helps regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels.

Fenugreek also improves lipid profiles. This activity mainly concerns bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides, which it helps to lower. It is thanks to all these beneficial actions that, according to some authors, fenugreek not only contributes to weight loss, but could also be a heart protector

Boosts the immune system

Fenugreek is also a good stimulant for boosting the immune system. It helps the body protect itself against infections and bacteria. This makes it a real ally for fragile people who regularly suffer from winter ailments. In addition to its protection against winter viruses, fenugreek seed has expectorant properties, making it easier to treat coughs and sore throats.

How to use fenugreek ?

To take full advantage of its virtues, we recommend eating fenugreek seeds or products obtained from its seeds. Fenugreek can be used as a powder, infusion, capsule or compress for cutaneous application. It is also used in cooking, as a spice that is widely used in India to spice up meat and fish dishes.

A short course of 1 to 2 months is recommended.
