Ghee: an essential for boosting the virtues of plant powders

Holistic, natural and preventive, traditional Indian medicine aims to bring well-being and balance. It focuses on the vital energies present in each individual, as well as in the environment around them, in the quest for harmony. Among the most commonly used natural Ayurvedic products is ghee, a clarified Indian butter considered rasayana (regenerating the body) in Ayurveda.

Discover its virtues in this article, as well as those of the herbal powders with which it can be combined.

What is ghee?

Ghee is a clarified butter highly prized in Ayurvedic medicine. Made from sweet butter brought to the boil, it is pure fat. In fact, the process of preparing ghee clarified butter removes water, protein and lactose. As a result, organic ghee is easier to digest than conventional butters. It also has a higher vitamin content.

Because of its beautiful golden color and innumerable therapeutic virtues, ghee is nicknamed “India's Gold” or “Ayurveda's Gold”.

What are the benefits of ghee ?

Ghee has many virtues.

Lactose- and cow-protein-free, ghee is ideal for lactose-intolerant and protein-sensitive people.

It is rich in cholesterol and saturated fatty acids, and also contains vitamins E, K, D and A, beneficial for vision, bones and muscles.

By promoting the digestive fire agni, it facilitates healthy digestion.

In Ayurveda, it is also considered an anti-inflammatory, protecting the intestinal mucosa, strengthening the nervous system and improving the body's natural defenses.

Another advantage of organic ghee is its excellent shelf life. It can remain at room temperature for several months without altering in any way. What's more, it has a higher smoke point than conventional butter (250° C). As a result, it does not blacken during cooking.

Finally, as an Anupana, it catalyzes the action of ingested plant powders, reinforcing their efficacy in the body.

What plant combinations are possible with ghee ?

Ghee combines very well with many herbal powders, boosting their virtues. It can act as a carrier, transporting the active compounds present in plant powders more efficiently into the body. What's more, ghee is said to have soothing qualities for the digestive system, which may facilitate absorption of the nutrients contained in medicinal plants.

In Ayurveda, ghee is often combined with Brahmi, Fenugreek, Ashwagandha and Triphala powders.

Brahmi powder

Brahmi powder is renowned for its multiple benefits, from memory enhancement to stress reduction.

Combined with ghee butter, brahmi offers a unique synergy that promotes both mental and physical health.

By acting as a catalyst for brahmi's active compounds, ghee facilitates their absorption by the body. It potentiates brahmi's positive effects, supporting brain health, reducing oxidative stress and improving overall well-being.

Fenugreek powder

Fenugreek powder is used to support digestive and metabolic health, regulate blood sugar levels and balance fat metabolism. This plant is considered a “rasayana”, revitalizing the body and mind, an “agni-stimulant”, promoting healthy digestion, and a “vrishya”, enhancing physical and sexual strength, particularly in women by promoting the production of breast milk.

Combined with ghee butter, fenugreek offers a synergy of health benefits. Together, they improve the bioavailability of fenugreek's active compounds and facilitate their absorption by the body, thanks to their lipid base. This combination could help regulate blood sugar levels, promote healthy digestion, boost the immune system and support cardiovascular health.

Ashwagandha powder

Ashwagandha powder is a remedy traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine as a general body tonic, capable of increasing energy, strength and vitality.

An adaptogenic plant, Ashwagandha is also used to help reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the body, which can help calm the mind and reduce feelings of anxiety.

Combining ghee butter with ashwagandha powder creates a powerful combination to promote overall health and well-being. This combination could help reduce stress, strengthen the immune system, improve sleep quality and support overall health of body and mind. What's more, ghee adds a creamy texture and delicious flavor to ashwagandha powder, making it an ideal option to incorporate into your daily diet.

Triphala powder

Triphala powder is a balanced blend of three fruits: amla (Emblica officinalis), bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica) and haritaki (Terminalia chebula).

It is traditionally used to promote healthy digestion by stimulating the digestive system, regulating intestinal movements and relieving constipation. It is a powerful body cleanser, reputed to eliminate accumulated toxins, improve skin health and support the function of elimination organs such as the liver and kidneys. The fruits that make up Triphala are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which can help boost the immune system and protect the body.

A little less well known, Triphala is also used in Ayurveda to support eye health, in particular to relieve eye fatigue, improve vision and prevent age-related eye disorders.

Combining ghee butter with Triphala powder thus offers a holistic approach to supporting digestive health, but it is also said to be a general tonic, especially recommended as a restorative for the eyes.

In this way, ghee is an essential element of Ayurvedic medicine, praised for its many health benefits. Combining it with herbal powders such as Brahmi powder, Fenugreek powder, Ashwagandha powder and Triphala powder maximizes the benefits of these natural remedies. This combination promotes optimal overall health, representing a comprehensive and beneficial approach to well-being.
